Carbon Movements
In a collaboration with VibraFusionLab Invisible Practice explored the use of vibration in place of sound or music and immersing ourselves in movement development and creation, which was influePast Projectsnced by ASL poetry and contemporary dance. Vibration replaced the soundscape and was felt by performers and audience through a range of vibrotactile systems provided through VibraFusionLab. The performance space included a full elevated stage built specifically for this project and covered with 1,300 lbs. of black rice that was also responsive to the vibrations and able to be manipulated by the performer independent from the technology. Thus, a vibrational score was both felt by the audience and performer, and seen through the activation of the materials on stage.
The Invisible Practice collective members included Founder and Artistic Director Connor Yuzwenko-Martin, Ainsley Hiilyard, David Bobier, Jim Ruxton, and Chris Dodd. Throughout a ten-week research/rehearsal process the collective worked and culminated in a full length movement performance that was presented at SOUND OFF, Canada’s Deaf Arts Festival, in March of 2023.
